Vieques Sugar Mill Ruins

1/5

Location: Vieques

Getting there: Take the ferry from Ceiba to Vieques Island. When you arrive on Vieques, you’ll need to rent a UTV or golf cart for $60.00 – $160.00 and drive 20 minutes to get there. The drive is quite nice. Once you turn inland, you won’t see many cars. Park right in front of the structure picture above.

General Info: This is a relatively short trail around the ruins of a sugar mill. The only standing building is the one pictured. The rest are what is left of the different facilities. Inside the building we saw either dead or molted shells of whip spiders, which was cool. The buildings are really not being preserved at all, the grounds are totally overgrown so this is largely a hike through the forest.

Heads up: There were a lot of spider webs when we hiked here. Find a big stick to wave out in front of you so you aren’t covered by webs and banana spiders.

  • Off the beaten path for what most visitors do on Vieques Island.
  • The ruins are interesting.
  • Frequent shade.
  • A lot of spiderwebs.
  • Not the most scenic hike in Puerto Rico.
