Tortugero Spring

3/5

Location: Vega Baja

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 40 minutes west to the municipality of Vega Baja. You’ll turn down a narrow dirt road that will take you to a small dirt parking lot in front of the spring. The road is very narrow and I was concerned the whole time about meeting with another car coming the opposite direction. When I was leaving I saw some people who decided to park at the main road and walk the dirt road to get there.

General Info: The first thing you’ll notice is a really ugly play structure for kids someone has brought in and placed at the spring so kids can go down a short slide into the water. Sadly, you’ll likely see a lot of trash around, including in the water. The circular area next to the slide is the clearest. It was nice when I went and I was the only one there, but all you would need is a few kids splashing in the only clear area to make this spot a pass.

Heads up: I encountered a relatively small caiman in the water.

  • A rather large spring.
  • Trash.
  • Play structure dragged next to spring.
  • Caiman.
