San Lorenzo Petroglyphs

3/5

Location: San Lorenzo

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 45 minutes south to the rural town of San Lorenzo. Park at this day use area and walk up river, or find a place to park on the 181 and walk between these two houses here and walk down river. Either way, you’ll be walking through shallow water, but you won’t need to swim. Look for a group of large boulders. in the middle of the river.

General Info: This site is not commonly visited. I was the only one there when I went and I think there’s a high chance you’ll find it empty as well. The boulder pictured is covered with petroglyphs, some easier to see than others. I have found that nearly all petroglyphs are easier to see through a phone camera. I’m not sure why but it likely has something to do with iPhone video software wizardry. Although this boulder has the most and the clearest petroglyphs, as you wander around the area you will see other images carved into the rock along the river. There is more than one spot to swim and relax in the water, depending on river conditions.

Heads up: If you start from the day use area, hiking up river is a little dicey at first, but will eventually turn into walking on sand and through shallow water. I highly recommend wearing Tevas, or something like them.

  • High probability of having this place to yourself.
  • Very accessible Taíno site.
  • Hidden gem.
  • Many petroglyphs are rather faint, but there are a half dozen that are quite clear.
  • The hike up the river may be a con for some, but the adventurous will love it.
