Salinas Keys

1/5

Location: There are many keys, but we anchored at Cayo Palmas specifically (pictured above).

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 1 hour south until you hit the coast in the municipality of Guayama. We parked and launched the boat at this free boat ramp. The boat ride to Cayo Palmas was about 20 minutes each way.

What to look for: I saw more lobsters here than anywhere else, and I tend to look around for them. I caught one lobster but returned him after a photo. There are fish around the mangroves and swimming around the channel. I saw a moray eel, ray, and a barracuda as well.

Heads up: The current is quite strong in the channel. Trying to stay in one place to dive down a few feet to look around is a challenge.

  • Fun location.
  • Unique snorkeling environment.
  • A lot of lobsters.
  • Not much to see.
  • No coral.
  • Strong current.
