Regions

Puerto Rico is composed of 78 municipalities grouped in six different regions. I will further divide the eastern keys and islands into a 7th region. Each region is unique and has much to recommend it, but some are visited much more than others. I listed the sections below in order of what I take to be most to least visited. Check them out to find the best things to do in each region.

By far the most popular and populous region on the island. The metropolitan area is where ¾ of all Puerto Rico’s inhabitants live, around 2.5 million. In Old San Juan, the sun beats down on the iconic blue cobblestones.

Home to the verdant El Yunque National Forest as well as a lonely coastline with honey-colored sand beaches.

Foremost among the hundreds of small islands that make up Puerto Rico are the picturesque islands of Culebra and Vieques – both an idyllic Caribbean paradise.

Unique beaches dot the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Fresh water springs hide in forests. Not far from the coast, bats drowse within caves in the limestone hills.

Beloved for its tropical beaches, boasting some of the very best on the island. This region also offers the best surfing and snorkeling on the main island.

Forests, mountains, rivers, caves, and waterfalls abound.

A landscape reminiscent of southern California is bounded by the warm Caribbean Sea.
