Punta Tuna Beach

2/5

Location: Maunabo

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 1 hour 15 minutes south to reach the lesser-traveled south coast. Park here, at the gate of the entrance to the light house. You’ll need to walk down a steep dirt path falling into disrepair to the left of the gate. The chain link fences on either side are bending in towards the trail. The trail is short and will lead you right to the beach.

Things to do: Walk the beach – This is a picturesque beach with soft sand and a thick tree line of palm trees. The lighthouse on the rocky cliff above the beach adds to the beauty of the location. Get in the water – There is a sign at the entrance that cautions not to get into the water because of a strong current. There may be some summer days with flat surf where it is possible, but generally there are medium size waves close to shore you’ll have to contend with if you choose to get in the water. Walk to the lighthouse – The lighthouse has specific hours during the week where it is open and manned by a single employee who will write your name down when you enter. It is falling into disrepair, but it is nice to walk around the perimeter of the building and take in the view.

Heads up: Exercise caution if you get in the water, you may be the only person on the beach.

  • Very likely to be uncrowded or completely empty.
  • Picturesque beach with the feeling of a virgin coastline.
  • Historic lighthouse.
  • Fairly rough waves close to shore with a potential for rip currents that discourages getting in the water.
