Los Bohíos Beach

Los Bohíos Beach
1/5

Location: Maunabo

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 1 hour 15 minutes south to reach the lesser-traveled south coast. You’ll turn onto a dirt road that goes down the beach a ways where you can park wherever you like. There’s more black sand closer to the entrance.

Things to do: Walk the beach – If you have ever wanted to walk on a beach that is mostly not black sand but has some black sand and also probably some seaweed, this is the beach for you. Get in the water – It is possible to get in the water, the bottom is sandy and waves are not too big. But, it is often murky and has debris in the water.

Heads up: If you are looking for a black sand beach, this is as close as you’ll find on the main island of Puerto Rico. Just make sure to set your expectations very low, as low as they’ll go. You’ll have to squint your eyes and use your imagination to feel like you’re on a real black sand beach. The water was murky and had some debris in it when I visited last, so I decided not to get in.

  • Likely to be uncrowded.
  • Plenty of natural shade.
  • The surrounding area is very scenic with acres of fields all the way up to the ocean, a nearby river, and the Punta Tuna lighhouse on the distance.
  • High possibility of large amounts of seaweed on the beach and in the water.
  • The water is more murky than average, which is normal for beaches on the south east side of the island.
  • This “black sand beach” is not very black.
