Emajaguas Beach

Emajaguas Beach
1.5/5

Location: Maunabo

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 1 hour 15 minutes south to reach the lesser-traveled south coast. I’ve not been able to find an official name for this beach but the pin above will get you there. You’ll turn down a dirt road that leads along the beach and eventually continues into the forest to parts unknown. Pull over wherever you like.

Things to do: Walk the beach – This is a pretty beach with palm trees lining the sand until you get to a rocky section. There are also sea grapes you can eat right off the tree all over the place. I found them ripe in September. Get in the water – It is possible to get in the water, the bottom is sandy and waves are not too big. But, it is often murky and has debris in the water.

Heads up: The water was murky and had a lot of debris in it when I visited last, so I decided not to get in. It was the cleanest I had ever seen it, though. I have seen the beach positively full of seaweed.

  • Very likely to be uncrowded.
  • Plenty of natural shade.
  • A great place to find coconuts and sea grapes if they are in season.
  • High possibility of large amounts of seaweed on the beach and in the water.
  • The water is more murky than average, which is normal for beaches on the south east side of the island.
