El Periquito

2/5

Location: San Lorenzo

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 1 hour south to the country town of San Lorenzo. Park on the side of the road across from some houses shortly after you go over a bridge. Walk back towards the bridge and take the trail on the left to arrive at the waterfall after a short walk.

Things to do: Take it in – There is shade over a rocky area, where you can take a seat on a boulder. Get in the water – The water is mostly shallow but has a deep area in the middle by the waterfall. I saw people climbing up the rocks and jumping off into the pool repeatedly, even diving. You can swim back and sit on a rock next to the waterfall.

Heads up: Wearing sandals like Teva’s is recommended to navigate the rocky stream.

  • The pool at the base of the falls is deep enough to swim in.
  • Usually uncrowded.
  • Easily accessible.
  • The pool’s small size means that it doesn’t take many people to fill it up, there was one family there when we visited and they took up the entire pool with a game of tag.
  • Remote location.
  • Limited parking.
