Charco El Cantil

2/5

Location: Caguas

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 45 minutes south to the Caguas countryside. Park in front of an abandoned, run-down home and walk down their stairs until you get to a very short trail that takes you to the river. There is a large rock section facing the area in the photo above where you can hang out put all of your stuff down.

Things to do: Take it in – You can sit on the rocks and chill out next to the sound of running water and usually find the place to yourself Get in the water – The rock gets extremely slippery as it descends into the water and is coated with algae where it is submerged. I suggest sitting and sliding down the last foot to be safe. Jump – The rock wall pictured is over fairly deep water so you can walk around on the right side and then jump off, but always do a depth test first.

Heads up: Wearing sandals like Teva’s is recommended to navigate the rocky stream. Someone thoroughly spray painted this area with anti-garbage graffiti.

  • The pool at the base of the falls is deep enough to swim in.
  • Usually uncrowded or empty.
  • Easily accessible.
  • Spot for some mellow “cliff jumping”.
  • Every time I see that stupid graffiti on the rocks I get triggered.
  • Remote location.
