Boquillas Beach

Boquillas Beach, Manatí
4.5/5

Location: Manatí

Getting there: From San Juan, drive 45 minutes west to Manatí. Park on the left side of the road about here. This road can get full on weekends, so arrive early. There is an old man who for years has guarded the cars on this road that is prone to break-ins. He works for tips. Walk towards the sand at the end of the road. Getting to this beach requires a 10 min hike through a small forest. You can walk in front of or behind the abandoned buildings, there is a trail on either side. Walking behind the buildings is more direct. If you walk in front of the buildings you may get turned around.

Things to do: Relax in the natural pool – The beach is the best natural pool I have found. It is best to visit during low tide so the surf isnt pushed back into the river to mix it up and make the water more murky. Snorkeling – There’s not a whole lot to see, but you will see a variety of some of the most common tropical fish in Puerto Rico. Swim – Last time I visited, I brought my swim goggles and swam laps along the length of the pool. It was nice, the pool is not very deep and the water is fairly calm.

Heads up: There are more than a couple winding trails through the area. Always pick the trail heading left, and use the google map pin to head in that direction and you’ll make it. This is an unofficial nude beach. Those that partake usually lurk in the tree line. So, even if they’re there you likely won’t see them, but they still see you…

  • Often uncrowded or even empty.
  • Plenty of natural shade.
  • A calm, protected shore perfect for relaxing in the shallows.
  • A short, scenic hike to get there.
  • Nudists (might be a pro for some).
  • A bit of a walk to get to the beach (10 minutes), though most won’t mind.
  • The water can get murky during high tide and/or rough surf.
