Angelito Trail

2/5

Location: Luquillo

Getting there: Drive for approximately 45 minutes from San Juan to the northern area of El Yunque National forest. You’ll cross the popular Puente Roto, where you can stop to get in the water. Not far down the road, you’ll park near the trailhead.

General Info: This is an easy 0.8 mile out and back hike (0.4 each way) to the Mameyes River. The trail is mostly flat and rocky, but can get muddy. It is almost entirely shaded. The trail ends at the river, where you can get in the water. The river was high and brown when I went, but it varies and have seen many photos of the water running clear. I noticed less Sierra Palms and more large, mature trees on this hike than the typical hike in El Yunque.

Heads up: Be aware of flash floods, even if it is not raining where you are. El Yunque receives 150 inches of rainfall a year and the rivers can quickly swell and intensify.

  • Close to the El Yunque ecological corridor.
  • A river to swim in at the end.
  • Possibility of seeing wildlife.
  • Not as scenic as other hikes in El Yunque.
  • It is fairly popular trail, so expect to see a lot of traffic.
