Balneario de Boquerón
Location: Cabo Rojo
Getting there: From San Juan, drive 2 hours 30 minutes southwest. You’ll drive south, across the island, then follow the south coast until you get to the west coast. Park on the road outside some condos and walk across a large field of palm trees to get to the sand. The beach is very long but most people congregate close to the entrance.
Things to do: Relax in the shallows – In good conditions the water will be calm and clear. Though, the bed of sea grass close to shore is limiting. Walk the beach – this is a very long beach that is mostly abandoned. There are many cabins further down the beach that are administered by the government but have been in disrepair since Hurricane Maria.
Heads up: The shade is located somewhat far from the water so you’ll need sandals to go back and forth.
- A big beach that can never get too crowded except near the entrance.
- Plenty of natural shade.
- Calm, shallow water.
- In the grassy area, there is likely to be thorns so walking barefoot is not a good idea.
- The shade is somewhat removed from the shore.
- The walk from the car to the water is relatively long and hot.
