It&#8217;s the reason I visited, but it turns out it is cool for other reasons as well. It&#8217;s a huge lake covering 3,200 square miles, sitting 12,500 feet above sea level on the border between southern Peru and western Bolivia. We drove through the night to Arequipa &#8211; a 10-hour bus ride. I really wanted to see Arequipa, but sadly didn&#8217;t have time. Those who were visiting Arequipa got off the bus, and those who were leaving the city boarded. I don&#8217;t remember getting the chance to deboard. We continued the long drive. We had 5 more hours ahead of us.\u00a0<\/p><p>When I was finally wide awake, I noticed that the bus was steadily climbing up hill after hill. The countryside grew greener but stayed rugged. There was some cool stuff but it felt overpriced so I didn&#8217;t buy anything there.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fdee15 On the way there, I walked through <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/xJ1X5YTE8a5eEqbP8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pino Park<\/a>. There was some kind of celebration taking place. Marching bands played music with drums and brass. A few dancers in traditional garb moved in time with the music, their long skirts swaying. To get there, you need to climb up 600-700 steps. I was hot from the climb and decided not to bring a jacket. It was a bad move. It was all pretty touristy, but it was still very cool. By night, a giant white cross on the hill just below us lights up, on Wednesday\u2019s the sound of the church\u2019s hymns makes its way to our porch. The night comes alive with the sound of frogs and insects and the occasional Puerto Rican screech owl. House geckos crawl around the house\u2019s exterior to hunt bugs drawn by the light. I feel lucky every day to live here and do my best to never take it for granted. We love exploring the island and since moving here, have done and seen a lot. My google maps is a messy mix of pins, many are pins of where I want to visit, and dozens more are favorite spots I have saved, from beaches, to hikes, to restaurants, to cultural sites, and more. Puerto Rico is a big island and there is so much to do. We have played the part of tour guide for friends and family on numerous occasions. I like to plan everything, which means a detailed itinerary crafted for every visit.
