surprise. It has flown under my radar of American National Parks. I enjoyed it much more than I had anticipated. The rainforest felt old and covered in ferns and moss &#8211; quintessential PNW.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d60a3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d60a3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"338\">Friday, May 24th, we drove from our home in Oregon to Puyallup, Washington, a trip of about two and a half hours. We stayed the night with my brother and his family before heading into Olympic National Park the next morning.<\/p><p data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"1417\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section drove roughly three hours from Puyallup to <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/MX73JEXxQ8EVXVi3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake Quinault Lodge<\/a> and started with the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/8AaTfXB39T8a5BXi9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinault Rainforest Trail<\/a>. The hike was short but incredibly dense and green, with towering trees, thick ferns, and mushrooms scattered everywhere along the forest floor. There were very few people on the trail, which made it feel quiet and immersive. It ended up being one of our favorite walks of the entire trip.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8162c23 elementor-widget It\u2019s a small waterfall just off the side of the road. When we arrived, there was only one other car in the parking area. The setting was peaceful and photogenic. Recent storms had washed away much of the soil around its roots, leaving the massive tree suspended just above the ground. href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/gSC6yPYEt8LjdFga6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoh Rainforest<\/a> and walked the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/qEPhVXpPdmX9jzjr5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hall of Mosses Trail<\/a>. The trail is aptly named. The trees were completely coated in thick, green moss. We cooked New York steaks on our one-burner camping stove and settled in for our first night of camping on the trip. So naturally, we had to visit Forks. One thing that quickly became clear on this trip is how spread out everything is in Olympic National Park. We slowly made a clockwise loop around the park, starting at its southernmost point. Indi and I find waterfalls to often be anticlimactic, so we did not stay long. More specifically, we live in a small, lovely home perched on the side of a mountain that affords us a beautiful view we never tire of. The small road off the highway to get to our house has eroded to an alarming extent, and will eventually collapse, but to live in such a place is well worth the risk. By day, lush, green mountains are visible extending from a small valley. A river cuts a path between the mountains; a short ride on my moped can take me to a spot in the river where a 6 ft waterfall flows into a round pool where green herons fish and locals cool off. By night, a giant white cross on the hill just below us lights up, on Wednesday\u2019s the sound of the church\u2019s hymns makes its way to our porch. The night comes alive with the sound of frogs and insects and the occasional Puerto Rican screech owl. House geckos crawl around the house\u2019s exterior to hunt bugs drawn by the light. I feel lucky every day to live here and do my best to never take it for granted. We love exploring the island and since moving here, have done and seen a lot. My google maps is a messy mix of pins, many are pins of where I want to visit, and dozens more are favorite spots I have saved, from beaches, to hikes, to restaurants, to cultural sites, and more. Puerto Rico is a big island and there is so much to do. We have played the part of tour guide for friends and family on numerous occasions. I like to plan everything, which means a detailed itinerary crafted for every visit. A river cuts a path between the mountains; a short ride on my moped can take me to a spot in the river where a 6 ft waterfall flows into a round pool where green herons fish and locals cool off. By night, a giant white cross on the hill just below us lights up, on Wednesday\u2019s the sound of the church\u2019s hymns makes its way to our porch. The night comes alive with the sound of frogs and insects and the occasional Puerto Rican screech owl. House geckos crawl around the house\u2019s exterior to hunt bugs drawn by the light. I feel lucky every day to live here and do my best to never take it for granted. We love exploring the island and since moving here, have done and seen a lot. My google maps is a messy mix of pins, many are pins of where I want to visit, and dozens more are favorite spots I have saved, from beaches, to hikes, to restaurants, to cultural sites, and more. Puerto Rico is a big island and there is so much to do. We have played the part of tour guide for friends and family on numerous occasions. I like to plan everything, which means a detailed itinerary crafted for every visit.
