largest city and economic hub. Taking a taxi through the city for the first time reminded me of the cityscape scene from Ghost in the Shell. The city seems to walk the line between progress and disrepair. It&#8217;s full of tall skyscrapers, some new and pristine, others seem to be much older and show signs of premature aging. It&#8217;s a surprisingly eclectic city I wish I had more time to explore.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-384a756 Before we left on the tour, I had a very violent bathroom experience outside of the mosque. So, I felt like a dirty sinner upon entering. The building was apparently designed by the son of a protestant pastor. I couldn\u2019t help but think the architecture felt industrial and even hostile. It was all straight lines and polished metal. The size of the place is impressive, especially the main prayer room with its massive domed ceiling. They showed us a big drum they beat to call people to prayer. It\u2019s a tall spire meant to look like a burning torch, a gold flame topping the pinnacle. We walked around the outside of the tower without going inside because getting inside wasn&#8217;t straightforward and neither of us felt compelled to check it out. We went for lunch in the 2nd oldest building in Jakarta. At the time, I was led to believe it was the former HQ of the Dutch East India Trading Company. A quick Google search post-lunch informed me the building was a lot of things over the years but never that. Still, the building was beautiful and the food was excellent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We walked around the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/6zvdctUvjnwi7dm18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main square<\/a>, got a root beer freeze from A&amp;W, then went to a museum. Looking back, I can&#8217;t be sure which museum it was because there are several surrounding the square. I believe it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/cTLYmwfXv567kdny8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jakarta History Museum. <\/a>We saw interesting art and artifacts inside a historic building.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section The small road off the highway to get to our house has eroded to an alarming extent, and will eventually collapse, but to live in such a place is well worth the risk. By day, lush, green mountains are visible extending from a small valley. A river cuts a path between the mountains; a short ride on my moped can take me to a spot in the river where a 6 ft waterfall flows into a round pool where green herons fish and locals cool off. By night, a giant white cross on the hill just below us lights up, on Wednesday\u2019s the sound of the church\u2019s hymns makes its way to our porch. The night comes alive with the sound of frogs and insects and the occasional Puerto Rican screech owl. House geckos crawl around the house\u2019s exterior to hunt bugs drawn by the light. I feel lucky every day to live here and do my best to never take it for granted. We love exploring the island and since moving here, have done and seen a lot. My google maps is a messy mix of pins, many are pins of where I want to visit, and dozens more are favorite spots I have saved, from beaches, to hikes, to restaurants, to cultural sites, and more. Puerto Rico is a big island and there is so much to do. We have played the part of tour guide for friends and family on numerous occasions. I like to plan everything, which means a detailed itinerary crafted for every visit.
